Closing The Achievement Gap (Letter from Jack O'Connell)
To encourage ALL districts to take part in the CTAG initiative, all District and County Superintendents received a letter from Jack O’Connell encouraging involvement.Districts that elect to administer the CHKS module will receive, free-of-charge, a special report that disaggregates all their CHKS results by major racial/ethnic subgroups.
And as Jack O’Connell states in his letter…
The power and value of these assessment tools in closing the achievement gap cannot be overstated. I strongly encourage every district to use the CHKS and the CSCS to begin the process of collecting and analyzing the data, and using that analysis to map out strategies to address issues the data may reveal. The time to be innovative and seek solutions to the pernicious achievement gap is now.

The Feasibility of Mandating School Breakfast in California’s Severe Need Schools: Costs, Challenges, and RecommendationsThe 2006 state legislature authorized the CDE to conduct a study to evaluate the feasibility of mandating that all severe need schools in California offer the School Breakfast (SBP) program. The following is a final report of that study, following interviews with 44 school districts (60 schools) that did not offer the SBP and interviews with seven school districts (7 schools) that recently adopted the SBP. Results also used CDE data obtained from 6,523 severe need schools in California about their SBP status.
