The California Healthy Kids Survey is dramatically enhanced by the services provided as an integral part of the data collection system. The CHKS staff provide expert on-call telephone support, ranging from guidance about sampling and survey customization through survey administration and use of the results.Detailed instructions, a wide range of support products, and Internet access to all survey materials make the CHKS easy to administer. The CHKS staff compile the results of the survey and rapidly provide comprehensive, user-friendly reports with overhead transparencies for use in presentations. Additionally, a guidebook and trainings are available to develop local capacity to maximize the effectiveness, dissemination, and use of the survey results. See our Tools page for examples. Additional services include:
- Helpline (888.841.7536): On-call consultation by survey specialists will help in all aspects of survey implementation and use. The technical assistance Helpline provides toll-free connections to the closest of three Regional Centers (see below). Supporting this service in California is a comprehensive database that includes profiles for every LEA in the state, monitors their survey needs and issues, and tracks the services provided.
- Website (www.wested.org/hks): The website facilitates survey planning and implementation by providing online access to information about the survey, the survey instrument, and all support materials. All documents on it can be downloaded, copied, and even modified if necessary. It also contains administration and report history for all districts that have conducted the survey and includes links to other health-related websites and information sources.
- Training & Workshops: In California, regularly scheduled FREE trainings occur in regionally convenient locations throughout the year. Both Administration (PDF) and Data Appreciation (PDF) workshops are available. District- and county-level trainings are available onsite for a fee. We can also arrange for Resiliency-Based Workshops, Presentations, & Focus Groups. Call the Helpline for more information.
- Listserv: A listserv e-mail group links together California county and district survey coordinators, project staff, advisory board members, state agencies, and other individuals interested in health-risk behaviors. - Analysis: WestEd's staff of expert data analysts can help you conduct more extensive analyses of your CHKS data. Learn how results differ among demographic groups or other subgroups in your district, or determine the various characteristics of groups most involved in risk behaviors. Looking more closely at your data can help you determine where to target your prevention and intervention efforts, and see if your current programs are working.
- Regional Service Centers: In California, three Regional Service Centers provide technical assistance. Calls outside California or the continental US should be directed to the main (Southern CA) office.
