| Summary: WestEd's California Healthy Kids Survey revealed that Marin County adolescents have a high rate of alcohol and substance abuse compared with their California peers. In response, Fairfax Councilwoman Mary Ann Maggiore polled local teens and discovered that a safe, structured place to hang out would decrease the opportunities to engage in these unhealthy behaviors. The Marin Independent Journal reports that Maggiore has persuaded a local coffee shop to stay open on weekend nights from 8 to 11 p.m. only for teens and chaperones. Admission costs $5 and includes dessert and a cup of coffee or tea. |
