SB 472 English Learner Professional Development (ELPD)
Description
This 40-hour training is designed for K-6 teachers who have completed the 40-hour initial AB 466/ SB 472 training. The main purpose of the training is to support effective core instruction across the content areas and English Language Development instruction using State Board of Education (SBE) adopted materials and SBE approved supplementary materials. This institute includes evidence-based practical information, structured reflection, demonstration lessons, planning time, and opportunities to practice new strategies.
Who Should Attend
K-6 teachers, coaches, principals, and other district personnel who serve English learners. In order to receive SB 472 funding for this institute from CDE, upon registration, participants must submit documentation that they have completed the initial 40 hours of AB 466/SB 472 training, such as a certificate of completion or a verification letter issued by the district or authorized training provider. SB 472 ELPD Scheduling Options
On-site school and district SB 472 ELPD is available with flexible scheduling options to accommodate the specific needs of your school and/or district. These options include:- 5-day institute
- 5 Saturdays throughout the school year
- 10 afternoons throughout the school year
- A combination of the above formats to meet your scheduling needs
- the language and content demands required for EL pupils to access grade level appropriate academic content standards and ELD standards
- how standards are supported through the curriculum frameworks in regard to differentiating instruction through universal access related to mathematics and reading/language arts for EL pupils
- current and confirmed scientific EL research with regard to teaching reading/language arts and ELD, including how to apply this research to classroom practice in order to increase student learning and language acquisition
- oral language development, vocabulary development, and writing development
- how to plan and teach ELD and monitor student progress at each level of English proficiency
- how to teach the ELD components of the SBE-adopted instructional materials for kindergarten through grade eight or standards-aligned instructional materials for grades nine through twelve
- effective comprehension and instructional strategies to teach content through text and lesson analysis that support EL pupils in language development
- how to analyze achievement of English learners to improve pupil performance through the use of data from multiple measures, including and components of the STAR program, CELDT, and curriculum-embedded assessments and how student results impact and inform instruction for EL pupils
- early intervention techniques for pupils experiencing difficulty
- effective and efficient instruction of content standards using ELD standards and methodology to scaffold

Follow-up Practicum & Implementation Support
We also provide follow up technical assistance/coaching in the form of demonstration lessons in classrooms, grade level planning sessions, and support for principals.
