Learning Innovations at WestEd is serving as a collaborative partner with the Pinal County Office in designing, delivering, and assessing a three-part professional development series to train teachers and administrators in content-based coaching and mentoring.

Through a combination of direct instruction, small group collaborative work, practice, feedback, and research, participants enhance their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas including:

  • Adult learning and needs of new teachers
  • Research base around effective mentor/coaching programs and their impact on new teacher retention
  • Roles, responsibilities, knowledge base, and skill sets of effective mentor teachers
  • Effective communication skills and strategies
  • Content-based coaching
  • Classroom observation and data gathering tools and techniques
  • Confidentiality within the mentor/coach relationship
  • Matching coaching style with a new teacher's need for structure
  • Standards-based approaches to lesson design and assessment of learning
