Project Description: The Pinal County District Office provides an array of professional development services to teachers and administrators in a rural Arizona region. Learning Innovations at WestEd is serving as a collaborative partner with the Pinal County Office in designing, delivering, and assessing a three-part professional development series to train teachers and administrators in content-based coaching and mentoring.
Through a combination of direct instruction, small group collaborative work, practice, feedback, and research, participants enhance their knowledge and skills in a variety of areas including:
- Adult learning and needs of new teachers
- Research base around effective mentor/coaching programs and their impact on new teacher retention
- Roles, responsibilities, knowledge base, and skill sets of effective mentor teachers
- Effective communication skills and strategies
- Content-based coaching
- Classroom observation and data gathering tools and techniques
- Confidentiality within the mentor/coach relationship
- Matching coaching style with a new teacher's need for structure
- Standards-based approaches to lesson design and assessment of learning
