Project Description: Learning Innovations (LI) at WestEd, NASA’s Goddard Space Center and AMES Research Center, the University of California at Berkley, and the National Parks Service (NPS) worked collaboratively to design and deliver simultaneous bicoastal institutes to bring NASA scientists and education and public outreach staff and NPS leadership and interpretative facilitators together. The purpose was to develop concrete strategies and plans of action for infusing NASA-generated science content into NPS public learning and dissemination venues.

LI staff designed and conducted facilitator training for NASA and NPS staff, served as the overall institute facilitators and coordinators, and designed and conducted an informal project evaluation.

The institute design was based on LI's Authentic Task Approach, which provided participants with a content-rich environment and guided facilitation in order to transform existing challenges (informed by data) into concrete products and plans for action. This project was enhanced by the rich human, print, electronic, and physical resources provided by NASA’s Goddard Space Center and AMES Research Center. The use of technology via videoconference allowed for integration of learning between East and West Coast participants. As a result of this work, participating National Parks developed and instituted new learning venues informed by NASA-generated science content accessible to the general public.
