Project Description: WestEd is conducting both a formative and summative evaluation for the Lowell Teachers Academy of Lowell (MA) Public Schools. The Academy, funded for three years, is a complex and comprehensive initiative aimed at supporting new teachers to Lowell through professional development coursework for teachers, coursework and training for teacher mentors and content coaches, intensive mentoring for new teachers, school teachers support teams, and new teacher study groups.

During the first two years of the project, project leaders have used formative evaluation findings based on extensive focus groups, interviews, observations, and questionnaires, to make numerous adjustments to the content and processes of the Academy. Summative evaluation data, including such variables as teacher retention and administrator assessment of new teacher growth in instruction, are also used in reporting to the outside funder of the project.
