Director, Professional Development
Kathy Dunne serves as Director of Professional Development for
Learning Innovations at WestEd.
A WestEd employee since 1996, Dunne manages and coordinates large-scale professional development and technical assistance efforts. She also provides training, facilitation, and consultation to schools, districts, state education agencies, and institutions of higher education in the Northeast and nationally.
She currently co-leads the New England Comprehensive Center's (NECC's)
Advanced Student Literacy and Numeracy — a regional initiative that focuses on leadership and policy development to support literacy and mathematics education through teacher preparation, teacher program approval, and teacher professional development.
As the New Hampshire liaison for the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Northeast and Islands, Dunne works with the Commissioner of Education and other state education leaders to identify New Hampshire's research priorities and to support dissemination and knowledge utilization of REL Northeast and Islands- generated research. She also serves on REL Northeast and Islands research teams to develop issue briefs on mentoring, induction, and teacher quality. One such issue brief,
Analysis of Induction and Mentoring Programs: Issues and Impacts, was requested by the Massachusetts Department of Education and used by the Commissioner in a presentation to the Massachusetts State Board of Education to inform the expansion of state policy for mentoring and new teacher induction.
Through her work with the NECC and REL Northeast and Islands, Dunne designed and facilitated a retreat of the New Hampshire State Board of Education that resulted in the development of goals that will drive the work of the Board over the next few years.
She has more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing mentoring, induction, and coaching programs, and in the training and preparation of mentors and content-based coaches. She has directed content-based coaching and mentoring programs in Arizona, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire that increased the capacity of lead mentors and coaches to provide training to new cohorts of mentors and coaches.
Dunne has worked with several state agencies in the Northeast, and in Michigan, on policy issues related to the induction and certification of teachers and administrators. She coauthored
Mentoring New Teachers Through Collaborative Coaching: Linking Teacher and Student Learning and the accompanying facilitator guide. Grounded in research on effective mentoring and coaching, this book and guide provide extensive guidance, tools, and resources to develop mentoring and induction programs and prepare mentor teachers.
She served as lead facilitator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Parks Service's (NPS's) Earth to Sky Initiative, and NASA and the Girls Scouts of the United States of America's (GSUSA's) Explorer Institute. Through these institutes, NPS and GSUSA increased the dissemination and infusion of NASA-generated earth and space science content into work with park visitors, Girl Scouts, and Girl Scout leaders.
Dunne has taught at the middle, high school, and college levels, and served as a curriculum supervisor for the New Hampshire State Department of Education. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member at Fitchburg State College.
She presents regularly on professional development design, mentoring, coaching, and induction of new teachers at national events, including the National Staff Development Council Annual Conference, the New Teacher Center Annual Symposium, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference.
Dunne, who was presented in 2000 with the Annual Award for Exceptional Contribution to the WestEd Community, received a BS in physical education and health and an MEd in curriculum and supervision from the University of New Hampshire.
