Why Use Math Pathways & Pitfalls?
Math Pathways & Pitfalls K–8 intervention curriculum, developed at WestEd, is founded on core principles for how children learn mathematics and a vision of rigorous and equitable academic achievement. In scientific research studies, Math Pathways & Pitfalls significantly increased the academic achievement of diverse students in all grades tested.
- Use with the core curriculum or after-school, intersession, and resource programs
- Address key number and numeration standards (with algebraic reasoning)
- Foster academic language development
Significant Impact, Minimal Investment
In recent research, Math Pathways & Pitfalls increased academic achievement for the full sample as well as subgroups of Latino/a students, English learners, and English-proficient students. These findings indicate that using Math Pathways & Pitfalls for two years (15 hours per year):
- Raises standardized mathematics test scores. Effect sizes were as high as .40 for English learners and .29 for Latino/a students on standardized mathematics tests in English.
- Positively impacts mathematical language development. Scores on project-designed mathematical language assessments increased substantially (effect sizes .53–.76).
