The Community College Seminars in Reading Apprenticeship® introduce community college teachers to the central ideas and critical routines of Reading Apprenticeship. The focus of this WestEd service will be on classroom incorporation of Reading Apprenticeship to enhance learning and thinking in the disciplines. Seminar content is appropriate for all areas and levels of community college curricula: developmental education, transfer-level courses, career and technical education.
Participation is through registration with a maximum of 45 participants per seminar. Attendance as part of a campus team (ideally, 2 or more teachers) is recommended, though individual participants are welcome.
Participants receive copies of WestEd's best-selling book, Reading for Understanding, a binder of readings, classroom implementation materials, and other resources.
- Participants acquire an understanding of Reading Apprenticeship as an instructional framework.
- Participants learn to engage students in collaborative inquiry about their varied reading processes, fostering "metacognitive conversation" in classrooms.
- Teachers learn to make the complex, invisible processes they use as readers visible to students.
- Teachers learn how to apprentice students to the disciplinary ways of reading and thinking that are needed for success in college.
- Teachers learn to make changes in their classroom practice to build on students' strengths as readers and learners.
- Teachers learn to successfully engage students in more reading and toward improved learning outcomes.
- Videos and texts from community college classrooms form the basis of this inquiry-based learning experience.
Knowledge Base
- Participants will gain an understanding of the research base and key ideas of Reading Apprenticeship, a powerful framework for working with adolescents and college students.
- Participants will acquire a coherent theory-based rationale for implementation of Reading Apprenticeship that places equity at the center of student literacy.
Classroom Reading Strategies
- Participants will know how to model and embed the key strategies of Reading Apprenticeship in their content area classes.
- Participants will be able to make changes in their classroom practice that result in increased student engagement and efficacy in reading to learn.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
- Participants will plan classroom incorporation of Reading Apprenticeship to support their learning goals.
- Participants will have tools to share for monitoring Reading Apprenticeship implementation and impact on students.
- Participants will have an established network of professional colleagues from the seminar and access to an online discussion group for ongoing consultation about implementation issues.
The seminars are led by teams of WestEd's Strategic Literacy Initiative staff and consultants (community college teachers currently incorporating Reading Apprenticeship in their own classrooms).
