Teacher Institutes in Reading Apprenticeship are designed primarily for cross-disciplinary school teams of middle and high school teachers and instructional leaders interested in learning how to implement the Reading Apprenticeship approach in their schools.
Teacher Institute in Reading Apprenticeship participants will:
- Acquire an understanding of Reading Apprenticeship as an instructional framework.
- Learn to engage students in reading more and in building capacity and willingness to read more rigorous texts.
- Learn how to foster collaborative inquiry and discipline-specific "metacognitive conversation" in their classrooms.
- Practice analyzing students' reading, talk, and writing about reading with a focus on building on students’ strengths rather than deficits.
- Use their own curriculum texts to plan for classroom incorporation of Reading Apprenticeship to support their learning goals.
- Learn about tools for monitoring Reading Apprenticeship implementation and impact on students.
- Have an established network of professional colleagues from the institute and access to an online discussion group for ongoing consultation about implementation issues.
We offer Teacher Institutes in Reading Apprenticeship in two formats to accommodate your scheduling needs.
Format One: On-Site Teacher Institutes Hosted by Your Organization
Depending on your learning goals and scheduling needs, the on-site teacher institutes are offered over two to seven days at your school or district site.
Introductory Two- or Three-Day Sessions
In these sessions, participants will:
- Learn about the Reading Apprenticeship framework and instructional practices that support students' academic literacy improvement
- Investigate how they and others make sense of content area texts in order to coach and model effective thinking and reading processes in the classroom
- Explore students' reading strengths and needs by studying student and classroom case videos and texts
Extended Four- to Seven-Day Series
In these extended series, in addition to activities described above, participants inquire into student reading with an emphasis on embedding Reading Apprenticeship in their classrooms. Participants also learn a set of rich routines to support the discipline-specific "metacognitive" conversation at the heart of Reading Apprenticeship. The seven-day program typically consists of a three-day opening institute followed by two additional two-day sessions during the school year. This schedule allows participants time between sessions to work with Reading Apprenticeship in their classrooms before each successive block of training.
The longer series strengthens participants' understanding and implementation by providing extensive opportunities for them to:
- Examine their own classroom practice to refine and improve their practice of Reading Apprenticeship
- Learn powerful instructional strategies that support content-area reading, writing, and thinking
- Explore multiple examples of students' reading and of Reading Apprenticeship classrooms in action using video case studies
- Learn effective processes for working with colleagues to successfully implement Reading Apprenticeship
