Professional Development and Materials Development Associate

Willard Brown is a high school science teacher with 10 years teaching experience in the Oakland Unified School District, including 8 years experience supporting students in science literacy development with WestEd's Reading Apprenticeship approaches.

Brown's students appear in Reading Apprenticeship case studies and in a chapter he co-authored, Apprenticing Urban Youth to Science Literacy in Bridging the Literacy Achievement Gap, Grades 4-12 (Teachers College Press 2004).

Since 2003, Brown has taught preservice math and science teachers at the University of California, Berkeley to support adolescent literacy class with Reading Apprenticeship. Also, as an instructional coach at Skyline High School, Brown supported colleagues in implementing Reading Apprenticeship approaches in their own classrooms. Having worked with WestEd's Strategic Literacy Initiative as a consultant for two years, he now serves as a teacher on loan to the project.

Brown has a PhD in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.
