Rita Starnes is a Regional Director of WestEd's K-12 Alliance, serving ten California counties: Mariposa, Madera, Merced, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, Kern, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, and Santa Barbara. She provides statewide and local leadership for K-12 Alliance activities, including the K-6 Hubs and the Long-Term Professional Development Program for implementing schoolwide/departmentwide change in science and mathematics. Starnes has taught science and mathematics in grades 7-12 for over twenty years. She is past president of Science Specialists groups in southern and central California and was a state finalist for the Presidential Award in Science Teaching. Her professional development experience includes work with the California Science Implementation Network (CSIN) and the California Alliance for Mathematics and Science (CAMS). She frequently presents at state and national conferences and has organized local, regional, and statewide science events. She is involved with Equity in Science Education (ESE), working with migrant education in the areas of science, literacy, and preservice support. Starnes received an MA in science education from California State University, Fullerton.
