Using Technology to Support Diverse Learners

Digital Text / Improving Digital Text / Interactivity

Interactivity

How does it work:
Students that benefit from kinesthetic activity can work with electronic text in a number of ways.

They might use a color-coding system to highlight important names, dates, and events in a history article, by changing the color of the text.

In Microsoft Word, the Outline View enables students to “promote” and “demote” passages, based on importance. Research shows that good readers return to words they do not know.

Asking students to bold or underline words they are not sure of can prompt them to return to those words later.

There are also interactive tools built into software or on the web. Highlighting an unknown word in Microsoft Word and selecting Tools>Dictionary will bring up the definition, as well as synonyms.
