What it is:
Virtual tools and manipulatives can be good for students who have difficulty visualizing. Guiding them to the proper manipulative is important. Students can learn different things from the physical manipulative and the virtual manipulative, so both can be used together.

Classroom Examples:
NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Illuminations Website has over 55 applets that allow exploration of math concepts. Each is linked to standards and lesson plans.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for Interactive Math Manipulatives include: Algebra Tiles, Box Plot, Circular Geoboard, Coordinate Geoboard, Grapher, Histogram, Pattern Blocks, Polyominoes, Scatterplot, Space Blocs, Tangrams, Tesselations, and Triominoes.

Project Interactivate has a collection of tools for exploring math and science, including an explanation of "what", "how", and "why" for each tool.

CTAP IV's Middle School Math Project is a treasure trove of resources, correlated to CA Grade 6, 7, and 8 standards. Includes support for those providing training as well.

The PBS Kids GO! Cyberchase site has math games and activities, searchable by topic.

Math Challenges for Families from NCTM, includes a Spanish version of all text.

Math TV is animated, interactive, and designed for middle schoolers.

Create a Graph is from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Find excellent Calculators and Converters at Math.com.

Harcourt Multimedia Math Glossary has a version for each grade, 1-8, to display appropriate terms, a definition, and a visual illustration.

A Maths Dictionary for Kids is an animated, interactive dictionary for students that explains over 500 common mathematical terms in simple language.
