Using Technology to Support Diverse Learners

Visual / Do-It-Yourself Video

Do-It-Yourself Video
What it is:
Desktop video production allows students to mix video, text, sound, music, still images and dialogue into compelling stories, documentaries and research projects for sharing. It can stimulate a student’s capability to think, learn, understand and communicate.

How does it work:
Students have to think through five stages:

  • The concept stage (Purpose)
  • The pre-production or planning stage (Storyboard)
  • The production or shooting stage (Capturing material)
  • The post-production or editing stage (Making decisions)
  • The distribution stage (Compression and posting)

For details on these processes in the classroom, visit the Technology School of the Future.

Here are two popular software packages to help:
iMovie has brought easy movie editing to the desktop and has been included with most Macintosh computers over the past five years. The latest version can be purchased with iLife for $79.

Atomic Learning's FREE Video StoryBoard Pro is designed to give teachers, students, and home movie makers a tool to plan ahead when creating video projects. Works on both Mac and Windows.
