Using Technology to Support Diverse Learners

Curricular Supports / Structured Writing

Structured Writing
What it is:
The term structured writing can describe any consistent method of organising and presenting text. It can describe the process for prewriting, writing, revising, editing and publishing. Both computer-based and web-based tools can guide students through the process.

How does it work:
Technology can support writing in so many ways. Here are just a few.
Writing prompts can be a written question or even an image. Teachers are sharing their best prompts and an excellent list is found at Can Teach.

Think Tank is an online Research Organizer, designed to help students (grades 3-8) develop a a list of topics and subtopics for reports and projects. Based on the subject assigned, the students can refine it by choosing from a variety of suggestions and by using a random subtopic generator. This helps students learn how to refine a subject so that it is more manageable for Internet research.

Online diaries and blogs can provide motivation for writing. Sites such as TeenBlogs and Blogger at Google.com make it easy to create. A Blogger blog can be a diary when set to be private access only. More teacher control is found at ClassBlogmeister.

Elementary and middle school student writing projects can be found at Teacher Tap.

Gaggle.net provides free and very low-cost email within a safe environment. Teachers can monitor student writing, outsiders and spam are blocked, and other elements can be controlled.

Classroom Examples:
The Letter Generator from ReadWriteThink guides students in creating a personal or business letter, with heading, body, closing, etc. You will find the Lesson Generator used in a lesson plan for grades 3-5 based on The Jolly Postman at ReadWriteThink .
