Using Technology to Support Diverse Learners

Curricular Supports / Leveled Reading

Leveled Reading
What it is:
Selecting materials with just the right level of challenge can be essential in supporting diverse learners. Reading materials designed for a 10th grader will still offer a challenge for the average 10th grader- they may only comprehend 50-70% of the words. This may be too challenging for the English Language learner, so various measures have been developed.

How does it work:
Technology can help us find the right reading material for the child, in two ways. First you can run a check on any 200 word sample as described in the tip on Microsoft Word to find the estimated grade level.

Second, you can submit plain text to the Lexile Analyzer as part of the Framework for Reading site. This is a more precise measurement of readability, used in many schools.

Third, various databases contain lists of books that have been pre-screened for reading level.
