What it is: The Internet allows students and teachers to find pictures of almost anything. These can be copied and pasted into worksheets for printing, into PowerPoint slide shows, and into student reports.
|
How does it work: While some of the image collections state "public domain" or unrestricted use for educational purposes, there are copyright issues with using just any image from the Internet. One time use for a classroom or by a student should be permissible under the Copyright Act of 1976, which states that reproduction for noncommercial "purposes such as criticism, comments, teaching . . . scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright." You should not use someone else's images for your website, for something that is printed for distribution, or in any way that involves sales, without permission,
Classroom Examples: One teacher visited the online version of her school's science text and copied a graph from the text book into a test she was designing for students, so that she could ask questions about how they interpreted the data in the graph.
