What it is: The diversity of learning needs in today’s general education classroom continues to grow, including students with disabilities and those who are English-learners.
|
Who does it help? Students with disabilities can benefit from a number of features that are built into existing technology, as well as from some free and low cost resources. One frame for looking at access to technology for students with disabilities is called “Universal Access”. An extension of this for curriculum development is called "universal design for learning" (UDL) developed by the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), which draws on current brain research and the power of new educational media, to support curricular flexibility to meet the needs of diverse learners.
For English Learners, web resources can provide background information, interactivity, and relevant instruction. Technology can also help implement five recommended instructional strategies.
