The Apprenticeship Model

A key component of Quality Teaching for English Learners is the Sustained Professional Development/Apprenticeship model, a four-phase process that ensures participants possess the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver professional development using the QTEL tools and processes presented at the Building the Base Institute. This process allows a professional development team (PDT) to participate first as learners, then to observe and reflect QTEL staff deliver professional development, to implement Building the Base professional development program with classroom teachers while being coached by QTEL staff, and finally implement it in their district or region with consultation. Unlike a typical "trainer-of-trainers" model, the Apprenticeship Model provides a long-term partnership with participants that ensures the success and integrity of the program.

This model of professional development includes a certification process that attests to a PDT member's ability to conduct professional development in "Building the Base," our introduction to scaffolding academic instruction for English language learners. The four phases of increasing levels of expertise are illustrated below.
