The Building the Base Institute is the foundation of the Quality Teaching for English Learners program. This five-day institute develops an understanding of how the research-based pedagogical practice of scaffolding creates contexts for rigorous linguistic and academic learning well-suited to English language learners. It "builds the base," providing educators with a firm foundation of theoretical understanding and corresponding strategies for effectively teaching academic language to English language learners. By linking theory and practice, Building the Base enables participants to:
- Develop knowledge of three levels of pedagogical support: macro-level curricular planning over time; meso-level academic and linguistic procedures used in particular activities; and micro-level collaborative processes enacted in moment-to-moment interactions.
- Increase understanding and skills in how to use six types of scaffolding: modeling, bridging, schema building, contextualization, text representation, and metacognitive development.
- Increase understandings of scaffolding disciplinary discourse in specific subject matter areas through the exploration and analysis of classroom exemplars in secondary language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science courses.
