As part of the preparation for presenting the Building the Base professional development program, potential candidates must demonstrate their appropriation of QTEL materials, including understanding of the QTEL theoretical model and capacity to deliver professional development.
What does certification provide?
- Access to a larger network of QTEL certified professional developers
- Ability to use QTEL Modular Roadmaps 1-5 to provide professional development in your district, region, or county
- Copresentation with WestEd staff at national conferences and workshops
What is involved?
- Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of theory and practice informing QTEL tools and processes through successful completion of three written exercises
- Demonstrated professional development competence in delivering QTEL theoretical and/or practical presentations in two settings
Exercise 1: Assessing Participants' Understanding of Professional Development Content
Professional developers demonstrate the ability to analyze and address the levels of understanding of participants in a professional development setting. They are asked to read an oral transcript from a professional development session and to determine what participants understand and what they do not understand about QTEL theory and practice. They then provide specific strategies to address the misconceptions and to expand the knowledge of all participants.
Exercise 2: Specialized Knowledge About Scaffolding
Participants demonstrate knowledge of the major components of scaffolding and their application in QTEL tools and processes.
Exercise 3: Designing Instructional Sequences
Participants develop specific tasks for a given text and identify how the tasks support students' construction of knowledge and English language development.
Professional Development Exercise 1
Participants deliver a 30-minute presentation to colleagues using selections from a modular road map or theoretical presentations.
Professional Development Exercise 2
Participants deliver presentations to teachers using Modular Road Maps 1-5 or theoretical presentations correlated with these road maps.
