Latino College Preparatory Academy
This charter high school, a joint effort of the East Side Union High School District in San Jose, California, and the National Hispanic University, was established to provide an alternative to students who are not succeeding in a large, traditional high school because of a language difference. QTEL worked with the school's faculty from 2006 through 2008, with an initial focus on promoting academic oral and reading skills to move students past the intermediate plateau of English language development. This was followed with professional development to prepare second language learners to work at increasing levels of conceptual, academic, and linguistic sophistication, with an emphasis on academic writing and building the competencies for success in college.
Funding for this work was provided by the James Irvine Foundation.
