Research Associate
Rose Vilchez is a Research Associate with WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project. She develops tools and processes for teaching science to upper-elementary English language learners in both Spanish and English, and she designs and conducts teacher professional development to enhance teacher expertise in promoting academic language development. A focus for Vilchez is QTEL implementation in California’s Palm Springs and Rialto Unified School Districts.
Vilchez, who earned National Board Certification in the field of English as a New Language, is a member of the research team conducting the national study of the Impact of National Board Certified Teachers in Low-Performing Schools. She is also conducting a pilot study examining the teaching practice of middle school teachers who have participated in professional development.
Vilchez taught in bilingual and structured English immersion classrooms and was an instructional coach focusing on English language development in elementary and secondary schools in Southern California.
Vilchez received an MA in Education at the University of California, Riverside. She is currently working on a PhD in language, literacy, society, and culture from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley.
