Associate Director
As Associate Director of WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project, Leslie Hamburger focuses on the administration of QTEL and its strategic development. She also works with school and district instructional leaders in support of QTEL implementation at their local sites.
Hamburger draws on her leadership, mathematics, and professional development background to design and conduct professional development for instructional leaders and for teachers of mathematics. Her special interest in the role of literacy in mathematics learning is reflected in classroom tools and processes she has designed for teaching mathematics to secondary school English learners.
Prior to joining WestEd, Hamburger was an assistant principal in a large comprehensive high school, where she was responsible for promoting mathematics reform, curricular alignment, implementation of content standards, a schoolwide testing program, and increased student achievement.
As a mathematics resource teacher and curriculum specialist, Hamburger designed mathematics curricula and conducted professional development and coaching with a focus on linguistically diverse students. This work resulted in the implementation of a standards-based mathematics program and formative assessment process designed to improve mathematics achievement for all students. Hamburger also taught and developed curricula at the secondary level for bilingual, sheltered, transitional, mainstream, and GATE (gifted and talented) mathematics classes.
She received an MA in educational leadership from San Jose State University.
