Senior Research Associate
Steven Weiss is a Senior Research Associate in WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project. He designs and conducts professional development that enhances the pedagogical and theoretical knowledge of social studies, English language arts, and ESL teachers who work with adolescent English learners. A current focus for Weiss is QTEL implementation in the Austin Unified School District.
Weiss also collaborates in the Study of Promising Practices for the Instruction of English Learners. Funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, this study is designed to provide policymakers and school leaders with information on the most promising programs and interventions for middle school English learners. Also, Weiss serves as webmaster of the QTEL website and was instrumental in its development as a resource for educators nationwide.
Prior to joining WestEd, Weiss was a K–8 assistant principal and an English language development and bilingual resource teacher. During his tenure as assistant principal, he worked closely with teachers and fellow administrators to improve instructional practices for English language learners through staff development, coaching, and teacher evaluation. He also worked as a high school classroom teacher, teaching Spanish-bilingual social studies, Spanish, and beginning through advanced levels of ESL.
Weiss received an MA in Spanish from Middlebury College and an MA in educational administration from San Francisco State University.
