At the University of California, Berkeley, Schmida was an instructor in the College Writing Programs, where she designed curriculum and taught reading and composition to UCB freshmen and sophomores. While a graduate student, Schmida won multiple awards, including Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award and Outstanding Dissertation Award.
Prior to teaching at UC Berkeley, Schmida was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, where she taught English as a foreign language and worked with local village women in several grassroots business projects. She also taught at the National Teacher Training College in the capital city of Bissau.
Schmida received a PhD in language, literacy, and culture from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. She also holds an MA in education and a BA in linguistics from UC Berkeley.
