Senior Program Associate
Nicholas Catechis is a Senior Program Associate in WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project. Drawing on past teaching and administrative experience, he promotes the academic success of English language learners through QTEL professional development that ranges from preservice education through teacher leadership. A current focus for Catechis is QTEL implementation in the San Diego Unified School District.
Catechis collaborates with school-based staff to improve the delivery of instruction for English language learners. His expertise includes developing and implementing research-based instructional materials and workshops, coaching, and modeling lessons and other activities for educators of linguistically and culturally diverse student populations.
Prior to joining QTEL, Catechis served in the New York City Department of Education as an English as a second language teacher, an assistant principal, and a school district administrator. In all these roles, he facilitated the implementation of high-quality, research-based initiatives for English language learners. Catechis led district teams during New York’s citywide QTEL implementation, integrating district and QTEL priorities for engaging high school English language learners in academically challenging coursework.
Catechis received an MA in educational administration from New York University and an MA in the teaching of English to speakers of other languages from Hunter College, City University of New York.
