Senior Research Associate
Nanette Koelsch is a Senior Research Associate in WestEd’s Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) project. She designs and conducts research-based professional development for teachers of English language learners. Koelsch also focuses on the development of curricula that exemplify the QTEL instructional strategies.
In addition, Koelsch brings expertise in literacy education, culturally relevant assessment, and social studies pedagogy and curriculum to her QTEL work. Previously at WestEd, Koelsch managed district-level projects to develop assessments for ethnolinguistically and culturally diverse students and worked closely with educators to develop social studies curricula and curriculum-embedded assessments to inform instruction and meet state standards.
As an instructor in the Northern Arizona University Department of Bilingual and Multicultural Education, Koelsch taught graduate courses addressing literacy and the education of linguistically and culturally diverse students. As an elementary and middle school teacher, she taught English language arts, social studies, and mathematics in heterogeneously mixed classes of English language learners and native English speakers.
Koelsch received an MA in language, literacy, and culture from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is completing work on a PhD.
