This DVD and accompanying guidebook, Preschool English Learners: Principles and Practices to Promote Language, Literacy, and Learning, in English and Spanish, provide information on how young children acquire English as a second language. Research-based strategies are featured for teachers to support English learners. The DVD is closed-captioned and formatted so that viewers can see it in its entirety or in sections. The DVD was produced for the California Department of Education by WestEd's Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC).

English Learners, Language, and Literacy in the Early Years (ELLLEY)

This customized seminar provides preschool teachers, program directors, and trainers with the following:
  • A deeper understanding of key concepts such as second language acquisition, home literacy and language practices, and pre-literacy skills
  • A set of practical teaching strategies for use in preschool settings with English learners
Based on current research and most promising practices, each seminar focuses on tools and resources that build the capacity of preschool teachers to work successfully with English learners. Throughout the seminar, material is presented using a multimedia approach that integrates recommended adult learning principles. Participants receive a packet of support materials that clearly illustrate key concepts and practices.
