WestEd’s Health and Human Development Program focuses on conducting research and providing technical assistance related to youth health, school success, behavior, and overall positive development. This includes the prevention of risky or problem behaviors that are barriers to learning and well-being—such as substance abuse, violence, bullying, delinquency, and early sexual behavior—and the promotion of youth resilience, academic achievement, and career readiness.
Position Description
Assist in the development and implementation of technical assistance systems aimed at building the capacity of school and afterschool program staff to address the needs of youth, including military dependent students.
Responsibilities
WestEd is seeking to fill the position of School Climate Specialist as part of our work in improving low-performing schools and afterschool programs. The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of technical assistance systems aimed at building the capacity of school and afterschool program staff to address the needs of youth, including military dependent students. Responsibilities will also include developing workshops on youth development promotion and other related topics for both school and afterschool program settings. The Research Associate will be responsible for helping schools and afterschool programs (a) identify student and school needs based on data from surveys and other sources and (b) develop work plans for addressing those needs using evidence-based strategies.
• Provide expertise and technical assistance to school and afterschool program staff on topics related to improving school climates within school reform efforts.
• Provide technical assistance on topics such as: using data in program decision making, youth and parent involvement, and meeting the needs of special populations, including military-dependent youth.
• Assist in conducting data analyses of student, staff, and parent survey data and in design of survey reports.
• Contribute to development of content for paper-based and electronic media.
• Lead in preparation of reports of the results of school-based surveys.
• Write proposals to expand projects within the Health and Human Development Program related to school climate, safety, bullying prevention, military-connected youth, afterschool programming, and other topics of interest.
Qualifications
• Ph.D. in educational or developmental research, quantitative social science, or related field.
• Background in education, school reform, military-connected youth, after-school programming, school climate, adolescent behavior, youth development, risk behavior research and/or prevention preferred.
• Recent successful experience leading professional development activities and coaching teachers or out-of-school youth program staff.
• Excellent communication skills for implementing workshops, institutes, coaching programs, and site-based research.
• Experience writing proposals, reports, and professional publications
• Knowledge of research methodology, measurement, and data analysis
• Strong technical writing and communication skills.
• Experience in directing and designing research projects.
• Strong project management skills.
• Must be authorized to work in USA (visa sponsorship not available).
