WestEd developed and validated adult learning content standards by facilitating an inclusive statewide process. This work was funded by the California Department of Education in collaboration with the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

Five sets of content standards were developed and validated for the following programs: Adult Basic Education; Adult Secondary Education; Adult English as a Second Language; Older Adults; and Parent Education.

This work continued with the development of performance standards and model assessments. In addition, the standards in Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, and Adult English as a Second Language were aligned with the California K-12 English Language Arts Standards.
