Going to Egg Island - Storybook
By: Jerry Lipka
The storybook text of the Going to Egg Island: Adventures in Grouping and Place Values kit.
Information on the entire kit (storybook text, CD-ROM, a poster, and a coloring book) follows:
Using the story of a young Yup'ik girl's first trip to gather eggs, Going to Egg Island introduces to young students the mathematics concepts of counting and grouping. The first in the Math in a Cultural Context series, this kit uses objects and examples commonly found in the Yup'ik culture — foodstuffs, tools, everyday objects — to put mathematics in a broader cultural context. As such, students learn not only about the pragmatic uses of mathematics, but also about the world. Though the kit focuses on the Alaskan Yup'ik natives — a culture most children will be unfamiliar with — classroom trials in various city schools inside of Alaska indicate that non-native children find the subject matter and approach stimulating and engaging.
In repeated trials, the modules in the Math in a Cultural Context series have improved students' math performance when compared to comparable groups of students who have used the school's regular curriculum.
Included in the full kit is a CD-ROM, a poster, and a coloring book.
