What Is SB 472 ELPD Training and Practicum?
This SB 472 ELPD 40-hour training, provided by WestEd, is designed for K-6 teachers who have completed the initial 40-hour AB 466/ SB 472 training. WestEd's training supports effective core instruction across the content areas and English language development instruction using California State Board of Education (SBE)-adopted materials and SBE-approved supplementary materials. This training includes evidence-based practical information, structured reflection, demonstration lessons, planning time, and opportunities to practice new strategies.
Schools and districts may choose to participate in our SB 472 ELPD training with or without follow-up support in the form of an intensive Practicum.
Both our SB 472 ELPD Training Institute and follow-up Practicum support systemic implementation of instructional strategies designed to accelerate academic language development for English learners and other students.
- We present an intensive, thorough investigation of the most current and confirmed research on teaching English learners to achieve high levels of academic literacy.
- We model evidence-based, effective, and replicable instructional strategies.
- We coach teachers in implementing these rigorous strategies in their own classrooms.

What You Learn at WestEd's On-site Practicum (Part of the SB 472 Follow-Up 40-hours)
The SB 472 ELPD Practicum helps teachers systematically and strategically implement the strategies learned in the SB 472 ELPD training. The Practicum consists of peer collaborative coaching sessions in grade-level teams multiple times throughout the school year. These sessions are facilitated by WestEd professional development providers who model effective strategies in classrooms, facilitate grade-level collaborative planning sessions, and provide feedback to teams of teachers implementing the new strategies. This process ensures that teachers receive the support they need to effectively implement the strategies they learn during the workshop sessions.
Technical assistance is also available for principals and other instructional leaders to support schoolwide, consistent implementation of common, effective instructional strategies.
