"You made it easy to understand. I valued the chance to ask questions. Great job!"
"The Map has proved invaluable in helping classroom teachers understand the ELD standards. We are using the maps in all our EL PDI institutes and have requests for more copies."

Who Should Attend
- California teachers of English learners K–12
- California ELD program administrators
Goals of the Workshop
California teachers who have English learners in their classes are challenged to teach and assess two sets of language standards: English language development (ELD) and Common Core English language arts (ELA). The workshop is designed around WestEd's best-selling tool, the Map of Standards for English Learners, Fifth Edition, which introduces simple, practical ways for teachers to address both sets of standards simultaneously and for administrators to refine school and district programs. Participants learn to use the Map as a teaching resource to enhance standards-based lesson plans and 10 research-based, integrated instructional strategies are presented and applied to lessons in any content area.
Format of the Workshop
The full-day teachers workshop provides ample time for interaction and hands-on learning activities. The half-day teachers workshop covers all topics and provides time for interaction and streamlined hands-on learning.
A half-day administrators workshop covers what their teachers will experience and addresses school and district issues about teaching and assessing English learners.
What You Learn
- How to navigate the Map and focus on essential standards
- How to use the Map as a teaching tool to design differentiated, standards-based lessons
- How to use the Map as a classroom assessment tool to measure and monitor English learners' progress
- How to report achievement using WestEd's ELD Student Report form.
Who Facilitates Your Learning
Map author, Senior Research Associate at WestEd and veteran workshop leader, Dr. John Carr, conducts all workshops and tailors the presentation to fit local needs.
What Resources Support Your Learning
Participants each work with a copy of the Map of Standards for English Learners: Integrating Instruction and Assessment of English Language Development and English Language Arts Standards in California, Fifth Edition. They also receive other supporting materials and create a core part of a lesson plan similar to these partial sample ELD-ELA lesson plans. A complete lesson plan template is also available. In addition, participants can download ELD report cards, available in Spanish and English, that are aligned with the Map and the ELD standards, allowing teachers to report in a meaningful, seamless way on their ELD students' progress.
What the Research Says
The workshop reflects research on effective professional development to the effect that it must engage teachers in constructive, active learning with immediate and clear application in the classroom. In response to research on school and district improvement, the facilitator works with clients to ensure that the workshop is integrated into the client's local teacher support system.
Cost
The one-day workshop costs $2,700 (plus travel expenses). A discount of 40% off the price of the Map of Standards for English Learners is provided for workshop participants.
