After spending 20 years in classrooms K-12, Mardi Gale came to WestEd in 1992 as one of the original Regional Directors for the Mathematics Renaissance Middle Grades and K-12 initiatives, funded by the National Science Foundation. In this capacity, Gale worked with schools for systemic change and improved mathematics instruction and the development of site leadership.
Gale was an Associate Director for the Mathematics Renaissance Leadership Alliance, designing professional development and working with districts to develop district leadership teams. She also participated on the evaluation team for the California Mathematics Professional Development Institutes, assembled by WestEd, and as a team member conducting academic audits, under the direction of the Comprehensive School Assistance office.
She was one of the primary authors of the curriculum for WestEd's Learning Zone mathematics materials, and was responsible for design and delivery of Learning Zone professional development. In addition, she is a continuing team member for the Comprehensive School Improvement Program.
Gale co-created WestEd's Aim for Algebra™ intervention program, a curriculum available through It's About Time, and coauthored WestEd's Making Mathematics Accessible to English Learners: A Guidebook for Teachers.
Gale has participated in many facets of cutting-edge assessment, including the initial effort to bring performance-based assessment to schools, serving as a member of the Mathematics Development Team for the California Assessment Program. She participated in norm setting for the National Assessment of Educational Progress, and was solicited as part of the design team for the initial conferences of the New Standards Project. In addition, she has written mathematics curricula appropriate for the middle school level.
Gale received degrees in English and philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and attended graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, and Pepperdine University. She received a Standard Elementary Teaching Credential, an Administrators & Supervision Credential, and Single Subject Credentials in Mathematics and English.
