Co-Director, Center for Child & Family Studies

Peter Mangione is Co-Director of WestEd's Center for Child and Family Studies. He provides leadership in the development of comprehensive training resources for infant and toddler caregivers and the evaluation of early childhood programs and services. His contributions have helped make the Program for Infant/Toddler Care a national model for training early childhood practitioners.

Mangione has worked extensively in the fields of child development, early childhood education, family support services, public policy, and research and evaluation design. Recently, he has led efforts to create California’s program guidelines for infant and toddler care, and California’s learning and development foundations for infants and toddlers. He was a major contributor to Ohio’s guidelines for infants and toddlers. In addition, he directed the revision of California’s infant/toddler Desired Results Development Profile and collaborated in the updating of print and video resource materials on supporting preschool English learners.

Mangione received a BA in psychology from Oakland University and an MS and PhD in education and human development from the University of Rochester. He also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, where he specialized in infant development and the use of video technology to study social behavior.
