Stanford University and WestEd are excited to announce a live online institute focused on English language learners (ELLs), who constitute a large and growing population in U.S. public schools.
With 5.1 million ELLs nationwide, several states and many school districts now have double-digit percentages or have experienced triple-digit growth in numbers of these students. Whether ELLs have long been present or are a recent development, educators, educational leaders, and policymakers often act with partial or unfocused understandings of these students' strengths and challenges, and operate without the latest knowledge of how to most effectively support their academic achievement. This e-institute is intended to strengthen participants' understanding and knowledge base with an eye toward practical application for improving local and state ELL educational policies, systems, and practices.
Audience
This e-institute will address the needs of- school district leaders (e.g., superintendents, curriculum and instruction directors, ELL program directors),
- state and local policymakers (e.g., state education agency administrators and school board members), and
- teacher leaders/teacher educators (e.g., professional development directors and institutions of higher education preservice educators).
- Kenji Hakuta, Professor, Stanford University School of Education
- Robert Linquanti, Project Director, WestEd
- Guadalupe Valdes, Professor, Stanford University School of Education
- Guest speakers featuring some of the country's leading ELL applied researchers, policy consultants, technical assistance providers, and professional developers.
Dates and Time (Note: Registration is closed.)
Every Thursday, March 25 - May 20, 2010 / 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PT(March 25*, April 1, April 8, April 15, April 22, April 29, May 6, May 13, and May 20).
Outcomes
Participants in this e-institute will have the opportunity to:- Strengthen their understanding of foundational issues in the effective education of ELLs
- Explore established and emerging research evidence and practices on the most challenging areas facing educators and policymakers — ELLs' linguistic development; academic growth and achievement; and assessment/accountability aimed at improving educator capacity and performance
