Reading Apprenticeship Leading the "Race to Literacy"
Adolescent Literacy: Learning and Understanding ContentThe Future of Children — October 3, 2012
A recent panel discussion by the Brookings Institution declared that the United States needs a "Race to Literacy" to raise students' literacy skills to meet the demands of the 21st century workforce.
An article accompanying the panel presentation noted Reading Apprenticeship® from WestEd as a standout intervention in disciplinary content instruction in biology.
Reading Apprenticeship is applicable across all curricula. However, a randomized controlled study funded by the National Science Foundation showed statistically significant impact in particular with biology teachers and students.
Reading Apprenticeship is currently implementing an Investing in Innovation (i3) grant to deliver disciplinary literacy professional development to reach more than 2,500 high school content teachers and 400,000 students across California, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Utah.
