The MMAP/Pathways Implementation Center is devoted to spreading the word about the Pathways curriculum developed by the Middle-school Mathematics through Applications Project (MMAP). This curriculum has been designated a "Promising Program" by the U.S. Department of Education Expert Panels on
both Mathematics and Technology, the only math or technology program to receive this double recognition.
As part of our Center's work, we conduct hands-on workshops and make presentations about this project-based, technology-rich math curriculum. The MMAP/Pathways Web site (
http://mmap.wested.org) explains the program’s components and its unique approach:
- Middle schoolers learn math through interesting projects, such as designing dream homes or rescuing a school of guppies.
- Students use kid-friendly versions of adult software that enable design and analysis.
- Standard math formalisms make sense to students in these real-life contexts.
After several years of self-publishing MMAP, we are pleased to have joined with Voyager Expanded Learning, Inc., to provide these materials to the entire nation. Voyager Middle School Math Program, Year 1, debuted in August 1999.
