Building a Smokehouse Curriculum Kit
The Geometry of Prisms

The mathematics in this module is set in the context of the Yup'ik people's main summer subsistence fishing season. Students grades 6-7 learn how to build a smokehouse modeled after the ones currently used by the Yup'ik people. In the process, they will acquire and utilize the math skills — geometry skills in particular — necessary for the problems they encounter. The kit includes curriculum, one poster, and Yup'ik glossary on CD-ROM.

Building a Smokehouse: The Geometry of Prisms is part of the Math in a Cultural Context series, a supplemental math curriculum based on the traditional wisdom and practices of the Yup'ik Eskimo people of southwest Alaska.
