Senior Research Associate; Director, Career Education
Svetlana Darche has extensive experience in evaluation, strategic planning, program design, and the building of cross-sectoral collaborations for system change and program improvement in education, workforce development, social services, and criminal/juvenile justice. She recently completed a statewide assessment of career-technical education (CTE) needs in California and is currently coordinating the development of California’s State Plan for CTE, including the Carl D. Perkins plan set in the context of a larger vision for CTE in California. She is also investigating opportunities to expand work-based experiences for students in California, as a means to expand upon classroom curricula and engage students in learning.
Prior to coming to WestEd, Darche worked in a smaller consulting firm as manager of evaluation where she led projects in high school reform, school-to-career, after-school, and criminal justice. She also served as Associate Director of a foundation-sponsored statewide system-change initiative in child welfare. She has developed an extensive array of materials and tools to promote career-related educational reforms and facilitate business/education partnerships. In 1997, she launched and secured funding for the Marin County School-to-Career Partnership and then served as Director of the East Bay School-to-Career Partnership. She currently serves on the California Community College Chancellor’s State Advisory Committee on Work-based Learning and Employment Services.
Darche has also provided career development services in private practice, and worked extensively with immigrant populations. She began her career with the U.S. General Accounting Office as an evaluator of federal programs. She earned her BA at UCLA in anthropology and her MBA from UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, where she concentrated on the public/not-for-profit sector.
