Director, Center for Prevention & Early Intervention
Virginia Reynolds directs WestEd's Center for Prevention and Early Intervention.
An educator with more than 25 years of experience in teaching and administration, Reynolds provides leadership and management for several large-scale training and technical assistance projects. She brings her previous experience working for the California Department of Education (CDE) to her present work with other state agencies. She has experience working at local, state, and regional levels with government agencies, in addition to CDE, and community stakeholders.
Reynolds has overall responsibility for the implementation of an early intervention Comprehensive System of Personnel Development for infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. This includes the development of a statewide public awareness campaign as required under federal and state statute.
She collaborates frequently with the University of California system, the California State University system, and the Community Colleges Chancellor's Office in her preservice and inservice trainings, distance learning projects, and personnel development activities. She provides consultation to the state on the development of an early intervention personnel authorization process, a feasibility report for a supportive supervision and mentorship model, and recommendations for serving young children at risk or with disabilities, and their families.
Reynolds has served as a liaison for the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, governor-appointed advisory councils, and state-level think tanks. She frequently presents to educators, parents, and state agency staff. Projects under her leadership have been recognized by the Office of Special Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education, and have received several awards for excellence for publications and other outreach materials from the Sacramento Public Relations Association and the State Information Officers Council during 1998-2002.
She received an MA in education from the University of California, Riverside, and a BA in history from California State University, San Bernardino. She holds credentials in administrative services, standard elementary, and as a learning handicapped and severely handicapped specialist.
