Kurt Larsen
Senior Research Associate
Kurt Larsen is a nationally recognized leader in education technology. As director of technology-related projects at WestEd since 2001, Larsen has helped educators, administrators, and policymakers throughout the country develop their use of the World Wide Web and other technologies to increase the impact of their work.
As Senior Research Associate in WestEd Interactive, Larsen is currently working with the California Department of Education to develop online support systems for school and district accountability. He has been a lead developer for WestEd’s SchoolsMovingUp since its inception in 2003. This initiative helps schools and districts raise student achievement in low-performing schools by providing high-quality resources, proven services, interactive presentations, and powerful tools that education professionals can use in their work. SchoolsMovingUp’s nearly 5,000 registered members come from all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and 13 countries outside the United States.
In addition, Larsen has worked with WestEd's Comprehensive School Assistance Program since 2003 where he directed the Regional Technology in Education Consortium (RTEC) serving Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. Under his direction, the RTEC provided professional development for increasing the effective integration of technology in the curriculum to thousands of classroom teachers and administrators, and train-the-trainer efforts throughout the region. Larsen was instrumental in helping the California Office of the Secretary of Education receive a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for school principal training.
In 2002, Larsen received the Computer Using Educators (CUE) Gold Disk Award, honoring his work and leadership in K-12 education technology. Larsen served as a facilitator at the Secretary's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Technology Leadership Summits (2004), and served on the Program Committee and as Poster Session Co-chair for the 2006 National Education Computing Conference.
Larsen earned an EdD from University of La Verne in Organization Leadership. He holds a BA in liberal studies from California State University, Fullerton, and a multiple-subjects teaching credential from California State University, Chico.
