Case Methods in Teacher Education

CASE METHODS IN TEACHER EDUCATION

edited by Judith H. Shulman, New York: Teachers College Press, 1992

This book responds to a growing concern among both teacher educators and their critics about the limitations of traditional teacher preparation and professional development. They point to the gap between the complex reality of classroom life and theoretical principles taught as quasi-prescriptions in preservice and inservice courses. And they are increasingly drawn to case-based teaching as a promising strategy of reforming teacher preparation and staff development. In this volume, a dozen prominent teacher educators explore their own pedagogical use of case methods and present actual cases and case commentaries. The resulting array of cases and their applications is extraordinarily diverse.

"Readers interested in how cases may be used have a rich feast before them, for the chapters reveal both the versatility of cases and the inventiveness of the authors. Cases, we learn, are helpful in teaching about subject matter, classroom management, inquiry and reflection on teaching, and knowledge traditionally conveyed in foundations courses...The accounts rendered in these chapters, the stories that are told, portray a wide variety of situations, decisions, and difficulties that routinely confront teachers and teacher educators...The case idea draws on a number of powerful intellectual currents in our time and appears as one promising resource for strengthening teacher education. For those interested in provocative early reports on this development, this volume serves as an excellent resource."–Gary Sykes, Michigan State University
