Staff from the Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) Partners for Quality at WestEd will present at this two-day education conference for owners, directors, and teachers of early care and education programs.

Description: This workshop will explore strategies for effective environments, curriculum, family partnerships, addressing diversity and special needs as found in the resource, Infant/Toddler Learning & Development Program Guidelines.

Presentation: Understanding Children’s Temperament While Creating Classroom Harmony
Time & Location: 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. (Pacific Time), Oakland Marriott City Center, Oakland, CA
WestEd Presenter: Judy Ishiura, Regional Coordinator, WestEd PITC/Partners for Quality
Description: This workshop will allow participants to explore their own temperament traits and how both their temperament and a child’s may influence the relationships in group care.

Challenges of caring for children in a manner that meets the individual temperamental needs of children will be discussed as well as moving toward a “goodness of fit” between the child’s temperament and the style of care provided by the caregiver.

A temperament assessment scale will be used for self-assessment and analysis.

Presentation: Developing Curriculum and Determining Goals for Staff Development
Time & Location: 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time), Oakland Marriott City Center, Oakland, CA
WestEd Presenter: Nathan Johnston-Chiszar, Regional Coordinator, WestEd PITC/Partners for Quality
Description: Learn to use “planning questions” to encourage children to build on previous knowledge and experiences. Engage with staff in a practical, hands-on approach to professional development.

The focused conversation method and video vignettes will be used to explore the possibilities.

Presentation: Providing Quality Learning Experiences for Infants and Toddlers
Time & Location: 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time), Oakland Marriott City Center, Oakland, CA
WestEd Presenter: Sue Shepardson, Regional Coordinator, WestEd PITC/Partners for Quality
Description: This workshop focuses on how infants and toddlers learn. Participants will engage in an interactive dialogue and hands-on activities to experience exploration from the perspective of children 0-3 years, resulting in ideas for providing materials and activities to support early learning.
