State and National Data
Comparing your CHKS results with other local, regional, state, or national datasets may help guide program decisions by placing the results in a larger context. How do your students compare to others in your area? Are the trends you see locally also occurring on a large scale? If so, the changes you see locally might be rooted less in local circumstances or programs than in broader sociocultural trends.
Local Level
- For information about how to obtain local data, please visit the Results section of our website.
County Level
- County-level reports are produced for all counties in California.
These are 2-year aggregated and weighted reports which encompass all schools which administered the CHKS within the two-year cycle.
County-level reports for 2004-2006 can be access through our online Report Search Engine.

State Level
- Aggregated California CHKS Data
- Healthy Kids staff have created reports that combine all of the CHKS data collected in the most recent two-year period. Look for the word "weighted" on newer reports - this means the data are a better representation of district enrollments (e.g., in the past, large districts that sampled were underrepresented). Older reports are NOT representative of the state as a whole, and reflect only those students that chose to administer the survey in the years listed. Please interpret un-weighted results with caution.
- CSS Results in CHKS Format
- In California, statewide norms are provided by the biennial statewide California Student Survey (CSS), sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General. Not only were many of the CHKS items on drug use and violence derived from the CSS, but the CSS has been expanded to include all the items on the CHKS Core as well as items on school assets and internal assets scales (Module B). For easy comparison, the CHKS staff have organized the CSS results in the same order and format as in the CHKS Technical Reports.
- Quick Read Summary of 04-05 CA RYDM Data (PDF)
- The CSS provides statewide comparisons for many of the resilience items on the CHKS, but not all. The Quick Read Summary table displays the results of the Resilience & Youth Development items for all districts in California that took the CHKS in the 2004-2005 school year (grades 5, 7, 9, 11, and non-traditional). Again, unlike the CSS, these data are NOT representative of the state as a whole, and reflect only those districts that chose to administer the survey in the years listed. Please interpret these results with caution.
National Level
- At the national level, the most important comparison survey is the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), which was also a source for many CHKS items. Some comparison data from the YRBS are also provided in the CHKS reports. Many of the substance use items are also on the national Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey; although comparisons are limited by the different grade levels it assesses (grades 8, 10, and 12).
