  • Literacy or disciplinary coaches and other secondary subject matter teacher support personnel
  • School site and district leaders who design or implement instructional programs for secondary English learners.

Goals of the Institutes

All QTEL institutes focus on increasing the expertise of
  1. teachers to teach rigorous disciplinary content and academic uses of language, and
  2. teacher educators, professional developers, and school site and district administrators to support teachers in this area.
The Building the Base Institutes provide educators with a firm foundation of theoretical understanding and corresponding strategies for effectively teaching academic language to English learners within their discipline-specific context

QTEL's Beginning ESL Institute develops participants' theoretical understanding and provides them with a wealth of meaningful activities that promote communicative competence in English for secondary beginning English learners.

The Instructional Leadership institute focuses on developing the capacity of instructional leaders to understand and promote quality teaching for English learners at the secondary level.

Completion of a previous Building the Base Institute is required to register for the English Language Arts advanced institute. This advanced institute will be offered depending on demand.

Format of the Institutes

The summer institutes are five-day programs that combine intensive seminar, lecture, and small-group work. These institutes will take place at the Golden Gate Club within the Presidio of San Francisco. For more information, please visit the Golden Gate Club website.

What is the Cost

A five-day institute costs $1700 per person. Teams of 5 or more will cost $1500 per participant. Space is limited.
