Observing Mathematics Teaching

Setting

This example of professional development takes place in the Bracken Elementary School in Clark County, Nevada. Due to its size and continuous growth, this district has a high demand for new teachers each year. It serves many students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and English language learners. Teacher on Special Assignment, Keith Cochran, the facilitator in this tape, works with other teachers to enhance their use of Investigations, the district’s elementary mathematics curriculum. In this video Keith, 2nd grade teacher Gilbert Montano, and a 3rd grade teacher, Terry Jordan-Hicks, conduct demonstration lessons. Other teachers observe and engage in a follow up discussion.
